For Raven O., the Boys & Girls Club is more than a place to go after school. Her Club is her family. Raven credits the Brookhaven Boys & Girls Club, a unit of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta, with being the place that she relies upon for almost everything in her life.
“My sister works at the Club,” says Raven. “Her husband and our executive director, Mr. Bobby, are like my second and third fathers. I wouldn’t be where I am today without my Club.”
And where Raven is today is great. She has a 3.4 GPA and plans to have a 3.5 by the time she graduates this May. Raven’s success in school is something she attributes to the Club and to the technology access, training and skills she has learned, thanks to Club Tech.
“I don’t have a computer at home,” says Raven, “but all of my school projects require typed papers or presentations.” At the Club, Raven is able to use the Club Tech Center of Excellence lab to do her homework. She has also learned valuable skills including advanced skills on PowerPoint, digital photography and will be learning music-making skills later this year.
Raven’s hard work and advanced skills are paying off. She has been accepted to several different colleges including Albany (Ga.) State University and Florida A&M University. She is waiting on that acceptance letter from one more then will have her pick of four wonderful schools to continue her education. Raven plans to study both finance and mass communications in college and start a career as a personal financial advisor. Raven says that it would be hard to imagine her life without television, so who knows? She may not only be a great financial advisor, but may be the next Suzy Orman in the making!
Raven is one of 8 million young people in the United States who do not have access to technology in their homes. But with her Boys & Girls Club and Club Tech, Raven can access a computer after school and learn advanced skills that have her prepared for a great future in college and beyond.
