Wal-Mart Foundation

Wal-Mart Foundation -- With high school dropout rates hovering at 30 percent, our mission compels Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) to help youth achieve academic success. Thanks to the generous support of the Wal-Mart Foundation, BGCA has partnered with the University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning (KU), to pilot a strategic tutoring program which will help Boys & Girls Clubs and their middle school-aged youth achieve academic success.

Launched in 2008, the Partnership for Academic Success project includes a triangulated approach to target academic success for Club members:

  • Strategic Tutoring Pilot Project for Club Members -- To further literacy skills of Boys & Girls Clubs’ middle school-aged members, BGCA partnered with KU to improve its successful homework help and tutoring program, Power Hour: Making Minutes Count, to pilot a strategic tutoring initiative.

  • Training for Club staff -- To support this partnership, training on academic success goals and programming was conducted to assure Club leaders and program staff are knowledgeable about the current status of educational achievement in the country and resources available to Clubs to help members succeed.

  • Measurement of Member Outcomes -- To assure our efforts impact youth and help them achieve success in school, and in life, Clubs must be able to measure outcomes on its Club members. These outcomes include: academic success; good character and citizenship; and healthy lifestyles.
