Thermo Fisher Scientific and Boys & Girls Clubs of America are changing the game for a 21st-century STEM workforce.
The demand for science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) talent continues to grow at a remarkable pace, while access to high-quality STEM education lags behind. Thermo Fisher Scientific and Boys & Girls Clubs of America are changing the game by nurturing a 21st-century STEM workforce that accurately reflects our society and leverages its diversity to solve the world’s most complex problems.
Thermo Fisher Scientific has been a national partner of Boys & Girls Clubs of America since 2016. Through the expansion of Boys & Girls Clubs’ DIY STEM Program, the launch of STEM learning and training experiences for Club staff and the passionate engagement of employees to spark youth interest in STEM fields, Thermo Fisher Scientific and Boys & Girls Clubs of America are increasing STEM education equity by connecting more underserved youth with high-quality learning experiences that inspire and propel them into thriving STEM careers.
Youth engagement and curiosity increases as Thermo Fisher Scientific’s partnership provides equitable access to STEM education.
DIY STEM is Boys & Girls Clubs’ hands-on, activity-based STEM curriculum for youth ages 9 to 12. Since 2016, Thermo Fisher Scientific has helped create and distribute DIY STEM kits with hands-on activities that connect youth with everyday science concepts. Additionally, they promote safe scientific exploration with donations of personal protective equipment. When the coronavirus pandemic shifted DIY STEM content to MyFuture, Boys & Girls Clubs’ premier digital platform, Thermo Fisher Scientific pledged to develop and support new virtual content, events and competitions that spark STEM career excitement and connect youth to STEM professionals with similar identities and relevant career experiences.
Great STEM programming starts with great STEM educators. In 2021, Thermo Fisher Scientific supported Clubs in increasing their capacity to provide innovative STEM learning experiences. Boys & Girls Club staff can now participate in a series of trainings, with targeted resources to build essential STEM knowledge and activity facilitation skills that ignite youth interest in STEM. This STEM staff engagement ensures high-quality, age-appropriate and culturally relevant programming for all Club members.
“Club members loved the DIY STEM kits from Thermo Fisher because of their passion for hands-on learning, which encourages a more engaging form of education. Since members are completing school virtually, they do not have the opportunity to learn through hands-on experimenting. Members enjoyed making slime the most and they used their creations as a sensory fidget toy after making it.”
- Kady Phelps, Education and Arts Manager, Boys & Girls Club of Greater Lowell
Club girls are poised to be the next generation of inventors and innovators with the help of the DIY STEM program and Club virtual learning platforms.

Through partnering with Samsung, we expanded access to the DIY STEM program and developed the Climate Superstars Challenge. The DIY STEM program serves as the entry-point for all members' STEM learning experience at Clubs and provides youth exposure to STEM through five modules: Energy and Electricity, Engineering Design, Food Chemistry, Aeronautics and the Science of Sports: Football. Climate Superstars aims to encourage youth to raise awareness about climate change and motivate them to take actions that help protect the environment.
Samsung's partnership enables interactive, hands-on learning while providing students with new perspectives on STEM careers and access to the latest technology.
